Explainer Article: Power Generation and Vessel Construction in the BlightHope Epoch
There are a diverse range of power generation types and vessel construction methods employed in the Antilles Archipelago of 2467 CE.
This article first looks at the foundational power generation and construction technologies created prior to the Seablight Deluge and Century of Deconstruction.
It then unpacks the mix of novel methodologies employed by the Hopesail Confederacy, Masqued Guildas, Pyrate Republic, and Blighted Tribes to propel their vessels across the Blighted Seas.
Technologies Developed Before the Seablight Deluge
Eight key technologies defined powered locomotion and industrial fabrication in the Solar Triarchy before the Seablight Deluge.
These include the development of:
- Chrominium alloy,
- enhanced hydrocarbon engines,
- ultracapacitor batteries,
- solar cell threaded kinetic ‘smart sails’,
- Surge Wave Drive turbines,
- fifth-generation air cushion landing craft,
- turbo-impulse rockets, and the
- nuclear fusion Lampshade Accelerator.
Most vessels in the Antilles Archipelago of 2467 CE utilise or more of these Ancestor technologies.
Chrominium Alloy
Chrominium is a high-strength light-weight chromium and titanium alloy developed in the early 23rd Century.
The expansion of asteroid mining into the Main Asteroid Belt from the 22nd Century onwards provided mass industries across the Stellar Triarchy greater access to Titanium and other rare metals, significantly reducing its cost price.
Chrominium quickly became the default material for the frames and plating used in industrial machines, military vessels, personal armour, delicate scientific instruments, medical apparatus, and space vessels.
Once Chrominium was developed through alloy mixing, it was quickly used for miniature medical devices, generation arkships, and planetary mega-projects. The mass production of Chrominium enabled the construction of Earth’s High Angel planetary ring, orbital space stations, the Lagrange Habitats, and interplanetary habitation.
In 2467 CE only a few factions on Earth are capable of manufacturing Chrominium. Salvaged Chrominium hulls, frames, and plates are extremely valuable and highly sought by Skrap Plunderers, Explorers, and Privateers.
Enhanced Hydrocarbon Engines
The power output, efficiency, and fuel mixture of traditional combustion-based hydrocarbon engines steadily improved in the centuries leading up to the Seablight Deluge. At the time of Psychezoa’s planet-fall to Earth in 2327 CE, enhanced hydrocarbon engines were capable of efficiently combusting a wide variety of fuels, including hydrogen, gasoline, diesel, natural gas, and liquefied petroleum gas infusion. A single engine was now capable of converting a mix of fossil fuels into power generation.
Enhanced hydrocarbon engines are the most common form of vessel power generation in the Antilles Archipelago of 2467 CE. They are prized for their flexibility, durability, and ease of maintenance. Their significant power output enables vessels to have multi-purpose propulsion modes, as exemplified by the SeaSkimmer, Merchant Airship, Barracuda, and Surface Waverider.
Enhanced hydrocarbon engines commonly found in the Antilles Archipelago include the cheap Zircon Combuster, reliable Orion V20, and high-performance Toyzan T3000.
Ultracapacitor batteries
The invention of high-density quasi-quantum dot honeycomb lattice electrolytes in the late 22nd Century led to the development of compact ultracapacitor batteries, replacing lithium, magnesium, and calcium batteries.
These compact batteries can power multi-purpose vessels capable of 60-100 kph for several weeks without recharge. Example vessels that use ultracapacitor batteries include Surface Threshers, Perimeter Quadcopters, and the ROX-Steady ATV. These game-changing batteries are often combined with enhanced hydrocarbon engines or charged through external stations. Many structures and industrial complexes in the Antilles Archipelago will have a dilapidated ultracapacitor battery on standby in the event of power outages.
Solar cell threaded kinetic ‘smart sails’
The advent of lightweight solar cell threaded liquid-crystal-polymer ‘smart’ sails revolutionised wind-based yachts in the 22nd and 23rd Century. These flexible membranes generate power through integrated solar cells and kinetic Bernoulli lattices to propel sea and air craft. They can also be utilised to boost hydrocarbon engine propulsion and to recharge ultracapacitor batteries.
Recreational SkySails were common throughout the Antilles Archipelago at the time of the Seablight Deluge. In 2467 CE these vessels have been re-purposed for other duties, including reconnaissance, personnel transportation, and stealthy movement.
Surge Wave Drive turbines
Wave-powered ship propulsion was perfected by the end of the 21st Century. The Surge Wave Drive uses a combination of fins and springs to passively capture wave energy that is released to propel a vessel forward. The manufacturing process to create a Surge Wave Turbine is relatively easy to replicate in the BlightHope Epoch, making it a popular form of propulsion for many Antilles Archipelago watercraft in 2467 CE.
Fifth-generation air cushion landing craft
Air cushion landing craft (hovercraft) were first developed in the mid 20th Century before languishing for a century. Relentless advancements in frame manufacturing and power generation (particularly the introduction of enhanced hydrocarbon engines and ultracapacitor batteries) revitalised hovercraft from the 22nd Century on-wards.
At the time of the Seablight Deluge the fifth generation of air cushion landing craft were efficient, powerful, and -most importantly- quiet. Thousands were used throughout the Antilles Archipelago to transport material and personnel between islands. Their specialised design and maintenance requirements, however, has meant they are not as widespread in the Antilles Archipelago as other propulsion technologies.
Turbo-Impulse Rockets
Enhanced hydrocarbon engines, gas combustion techniques, and air pressurisation funnels contributed to the peak development of combined-cycle turbo-impulse rockets throughout the 23rd Century. The final phase of turbojet and ramjet rockets enabled significant efficiencies, increased Mach speeds, and low-orbit travel for aircraft such as the Trojon interceptor. High-performance vessels that use turbo-impulse rockets can also be powered through compact ultracapacitor batteries, although power consumption will drain a fully charged battery in 1-2 hours.
Lampshade Accelerator
The Lampshade Accelerator (LA) is an advanced spin-polarised fusion accelerator developed in the 24th Century by parIkSaka Corporation engineer Ozwald Leighbowitz. The LA tranformed both planetary and interplanetary transportation.
Named for the engine’s bell-lampshade shape, the accelerator consumes pellets of pre-polarised deuterium fuel to generate tremendous lift and acceleration with minimal ionising radiation generation. The LA design enabled humanity’s expansion across the Sol system and led to the formation of the Solar Triarchy. It was the most common form of spacecraft propulsion at the time of the Seablight Deluge on Earth and the Second Solar War.
Planetary-based LA-powered vessels such as the SkyLance can comfortably travel into low-orbit and are only limited by the vessel’s hull integrity.
Despite the many improvements made to ionising radiation particle filtration and ejection systems, LA exhausts are still deadly kill zones and must be used with care. Before the Seablight Deluge, terrestrial vessels powered by LA systems would switch to closed-cycle turbo-impulse rockets and/or enhanced hydrocarbon engines when close to settlements to reduce the impact of heat radiator propellant ejection. In the BlightHope Epoch, aggressive assailants have been known to use LA vessels to burn across settlements. For this reason most settlement air spaces are tightly controlled, with sensors and missile turrets at the ready to destroy unidentified LA vessels.
Antilles Archipelago propulsion systems and vessel manufacture
A wide range of power generation, propulsion, and vessel manufcaturing techniques are applied across the Antilles Archipelago of 2467 CE.
Some factions are reliant on scavenged Ancestor technologies, while others have developed novel methods based on scientific advancement or organic Seablight hybridisation.
Hopesail Confederacy
The substantial dry docks on Hopesail Island, Nazau Island, Encore Station, and Key West construct maritime, aerial, and drone vessels made from metals, fiberglass, timber, and other materials. Steel laced with Chrominium is preferred for laying keels, cross-bracing, and armour plating.
Common power generation sources include enhanced hydrocrabon engines, Ancestor Lampshade Accelerator pellets, traditional nuclear reactors, closed-cycle turbo-impulse rockets, and ultracapacitors with stored electricity.
A typical Confederate ship may have a partial wooden superstructure clad in a mix of metals; generates acceleration through hybrid power, such as an enhanced hydrocarbon engine; has backup electric power stored in an ultracapcitor battery; and may have contractible solar cell threaded kinetic smart sails and/or a Surge Wave Drive turbine.
The 24th Century spin-polarised fusion Lampshae Accelerators that enable gravity-defying flight are exceedingly rare. Vessels with LAs are maintained with care, rarely used, and often protected by supporting vessels, extensive counter measures, and advanced sensors. The most advanced vessel in the Hopesail Confederacy is the SkyLance Enchantress controlled by the Northern-Teknocracy, which is supported by a task force of littoral missile corvettes.
The Kontore League Atlantica (KLA) has brought its aerial mastery from Nuropa to the Antilles Archipelago, including the design of the Breezeway Glidecopter. The KLA’s Wolke Meisters hold court at the Voliere in Encore Station, where pilots are trained and airships are designed, tested, docked.
Masqued Guildas
Like the Hopesail Confederacy, the Masqued Guildas utilise salvaged Ancestor technologies while maintaining their own production facilities. Nueva Esperanza has impressive manufacturing capabilities only rivaled by those in the Lucayan Archipelagos.
The Masqued Guildas’ Chefes and Falcao do mar favour vessels that utilise silent hydrofoil gliders, massive solar cell threaded kinetic sails, ingenious Surge Wave Drive turbines, and fifth-generation air cushion landing craft. For this reason, SkySails are utilised by the Windward Islands Empresa more than any other faction
Following the rise of the First Navegadorex in the early 25th Century, the Mascarada Cabala and Principal Guildas have also developed unique manufacturing industries and power generation technologies, including nanite-clad Chrominium hulls. They have independetly developed an enhanced hydrocarbon engine capable of silent gravity-defying airlift. as well as efficiently utilised wave-and-sail propulsion, resulting in the flagship Anjo Voadar. Many of their vessels are capable of quickly switching between power generation and propulsion systems, such as the Velejar Navios and Mastro Alto Navio Mercante. Their most powerful class of post-Seablight Deluge vessel is the Mercúrio Corvette, representing the next generation of post-Seablight Deluge technology.
Pyrate Republic
The Pyrate Republic are the ultimate Ancestor technology scavengers of the Antilles Archipelago. The quality of vessels maintained and manufactured across the Caribbean Sea vary greatly between the pyrate enclaves of Habaguanex, Kingstun, Bosque Fresco, Santiago, and Nido Mutante Nest. The Malvada Armada’s foundries in Habaguanex are capable of maintaining a significant fleet of diverse vessels, while Kingstun’s shipwrights have the expertise to design the unique Pauper’s Fortune.
The limited supply of Ancestor materials available tot he Pyrate Republic factions results in a hybrid mix of cheap, efficient, and post-apocalyptic ship designs. There are many variations of gas, steam, rotors, hovercraft, and extendable solar cell-threaded kinetic sails used when manufacturing craft. Common between these factions is the prevalence of Surface Threshers, Surface Waveriders, Perimeter Quadcopters, Trojons, floating sea bases, and barco de chatarra. The most powerful Pyrate Republic SkyLance vessels include the Malvada Armada’s Trio, Cibernetix Legion’s Chucilla Oscura and Blakbard Bucceneas’ Thunderbolt.
The Yucatan Flotilla and Cangrejo Hybrids are unique in the types of submersible vessels they can deploy. The Yucatan Flotilla has a consider fleet of hunter-killer submarines, including the Delfin and the multi-purpose underwater/sea surface/aerial Barracuda. The Cangrejo Hybrids gestate organic Symbiotic Seablight entities that work with mutants to attack from beneath the waves.
Blighted Tribes
The Blighted Tribes command a host of archaic, hybrid-organic, and techno-abomination Seablight-infused vessels.
The mainstay of most Blighted Tribes is the humble lancha – simple boats frenetically rowed by determined Kogregan.
Purely organic vessels such as the Cuboza are used to attack lightly defended seas vessels and transport Kongress Hunting Packs for coastal raids.
Some Blighted Tribes vessels fuse Ancestor hulks with psychic-infused Seablight tendrils. Chief among these are the Spindletop Disciples Predator Drones and Blight Blimps. The ultimate organic Seablight vessel monstrosity is El Casco, a psychic Tyde Kyndrid Madre Hyve piloted by High Blightspeaker La Almriante.
New forms of techno-organic Seablight vessels are constantly being created as Madre Hyve gestalt consciousnesses grow in size, strengthen their linkages with their enthralled High Blightspeakers, gain insights into Ancestor technologies.
